   ⚠️ LITERATA REPLACED FRAUNCES, 2026-08-27, because of the italic.
   Fraunces' italic at text optical sizes is far darker in colour than its own
   roman — an <em> inside a paragraph read as BOLD italic, not italic. That was
   measured, not guessed: rendering the same line with the weight stated
   explicitly, and with no font-variation-settings at all, produced identical
   output. The weight was never wrong. The face is simply built that way, and
   only thins out around opsz 144, which is a display size.
   The superseded Fraunces build is in fonts/archive/fraunces-2026-08-27/.

   ⚠️ AND THE OLD `'SOFT' 0, 'WONK' 0` DECLARATIONS WERE DOING NOTHING. That
   Fraunces download was cut with `opsz,wght` only, so Google instanced both
   axes out of the files; the tags named two axes that were not there. Do not
   reintroduce that pattern — check a font's fvar before writing an axis into
   css/site.css.

   These Literata files are the real variable font, both axes intact:
     opsz 7–72   ·   wght 200–900   (declared 300–600, the range the site uses)
   So font-optical-sizing works, and --lit-* in css/site.css states opsz anyway
   because setting font-variation-settings at all disables the automatic one.

   Subsets: latin, latin-ext, vietnamese, greek, greek-ext. Greek is NOT
   decoration — content/marks.js carries polytonic Greek (ἀνθρακιά, chapter IX),
   which lives in greek-ext (U+1F00–U+1FFF). Before this it had no webfont at
